District Considering Proposal to Name CPHS Tennis Courts After Former Longtime Coach and Educator

Clover Park School District (CPSD) is inviting students, staff, families and community members to share input on a proposal to name the Clover Park High School (CPHS) tennis courts after former longtime teacher and tennis coach, Gary Thomas. The online survey will be open through May 14 and seeks feedback on whether the district should honor Thomas’ legacy by naming the tennis courts in his honor.
Thomas, a CPHS graduate, spent his entire career at Clover Park High School from 1966 to 1992. He taught history and served as department head while building a reputation as a respected educator known for high standards and engaging classroom discussions.
On the court, Thomas led boys and girls tennis teams to sustained success, including at least 15 league championships and more than a dozen state qualifiers. He earned Washington State Coach of the Year honors multiple times, and in 1980, he was nominated for National Coach of the Year.
A naming committee convened by the school board, in alignment with board policy, will consider the input in making a recommendation to the superintendent.
